Description
Otocinclus Negros are miniature algae-eating catfish that grow to a maximum length of 3.5 cm. Similar to other species of armored catfish (Loricariidae), they are virtually covered with rows of protective bony scales, providing defense against predators. The structure of their mouths is adapted for efficiently nibbling on algae without damaging plants. Additionally, it aids them in coping with currents in their natural habitat. Their tails and fins are small, and the lateral fins are positioned close to the abdomen.
These diminutive catfish inhabit exceptionally clean waters in rivers with both fast and calm currents, primarily in the water bodies of central South America (Paraguay, Argentina). Since 2011, their scientific name has been Otothyropsis piribebuy.
- Temperature: Otocinclus Negros thrives within a temperature range of 18°C to 25°C, although they can tolerate fluctuations up to 30°C. Maintaining the aquarium temperature within this range is crucial for their well-being.
- Minimum Size Tank: Provide a tank with a minimum capacity of at least 30 liters to accommodate a group of 4-5 Otocinclus Negros individuals. This size ensures a suitable environment for their habits and needs.
